  • Pros: Many power-ups. Variety of awards. Challenging game play. Spectacular special effects and artwork.
  •  Cons: Confusing map. No story.
Fans rejoice as the sequel to The Treasures of Montezuma has arrived. The second installment, The Treasures of Montezuma 2, is a great successor as both games feature similar game play, power-ups and bonuses. Still, the two have a few differences.

The Treasures of Montezuma 2 gameAs The Treasures of Montezuma 2 opens, you select a male or female for your character and start your adventure. In the past, stories in games were rare. Not today. This one has no story, which could be a good thing because you don't have to read lots and lots of text, or watch irksome cut-scenes without a "Skip" button. On the other hand, it's frustrating the game immediately throws you into the gaming process without knowing the goal.

The Treasures of Montezuma 2 is a match three puzzle game. Like the original, your task is to swap tokens on the gaming field to make matches of three or more identical pieces. Some of the tokens contain gems. After you match such a token, you get the gem. To complete a level, you need to collect all the gems with the number of gems growing with every level.

The better and faster you play, the more gold coins you win. In The Treasures of Montezuma 2, coins are essential so you can buy and even upgrade power-ups at the end of a level. These power-ups are special totems that help you complete a level with various effects. For example, a red totem destroys several random tokens from the gaming board with fireballs. Simply make two successive matches of red tokens and the ted totem does its job. So, totems give you the ability to earn more time to complete a level, activate lightning and more.

If you perform efficient moves creating combos and continuously breaking tokens, you can easily fill the Score Frenzy meter to double your points. Make matches of four or more similar tokens to win bonuses that lead to breaking a larger area of tiles to clear the board faster.

In addition to Adventure mode, The Treasures of Montezuma 2 introduces two more modes of play. Adventure is the main mode with timed levels. In spite of the time, the game lets you complete a level except it rewards you with fewer gold coins. If you want to do better or need more coins to purchase a power-up, you can replay the level for better results. Besides, you can enjoy a hidden object mini-game after completing a set of levels in Adventure mode.

The Treasures of Montezuma 2 comes with a variety of awards. The better you play, the more awards you win. That increases your motivation to replay the game. If you do a good job with the matching task, you can change difficulty level for a bigger challenge.

As you progress in Adventure mode, you unlock Endless and Puzzle modes. In Endless mode, you get spectacular special effects in making matches while Puzzle mode has 40 more levels of challenging fun.

Probably one of the most frustrating moments of The Treasures of Montezuma 2 is the Town Map. It’s the confusing place where you purchase power-ups and upgrades. Since the game doesn’t have a story, it's easy to mistake it for a city that you need to build. After a while, it becomes clear that you simply build and upgrade your Totems here. It’s your Totem Sanctuary.

In spite of its drawbacks, The Treasures of Montezuma 2 makes a favorable impression. Though the game is too much like its prequel, it boasts of improved artwork, captivating special effects and entertaining game play.
