Around the World in 80 Days. Weird Tour

  • Pros: wonderful scenery, free screensavers, adventurous story, great sound effects and graphics.
  • Cons: unoriginal gameplay.

Around the World in 80 DaysHave an adventurous in Around the World in 80 Days. A wealthy man named Phileas Fogg risks his money betting he’ll manage to travel the world only in 80 days. He starts off from England with his fellow servant Passepartout, and on their adventure they help each other through the trials and difficulties that arise.

Around the World in 80 DaysThe storyline is revealed in and diversified by the main character’s dialogues and also through journal writing. This makes you avoid boring and long texts. In a word the plot is built on Jules Verne’s classic novel Around the World in 80 Days.

The gameplay of Around the World in 80 Days is not especially unique if you have already played The Rise of Atlantis or The Treasures of Montezuma. It’s a typical three match game with power-ups and barriers (freezes, narrow spaces of tiles or even brick walls). You as many of the same color tiles as you can unlock the available power-ups. The simplest is a hammer that breaks one tile. You can upgrade it further along so that it destroys all the tiles of the same color. Other power-ups include a bomb that bursts the tiles in a chosen area and a fireball that blows up the lines in different directions.

The difficulty level in Around the World in 80 Days ratchets up well, so that you’re less likely to hit a wall. And with each level you unlock treasures or pieces to fill the puzzle. At the end of each chapter, which is represented by one of the seven counties you visit, you stamp the country you’ve been to.

Advanced levels can be pretty taxing as beyond regular tile-matching you must move the tiles left and right to unlock other parts of the puzzle. This makes Around the World in 80 Days even more challenging, especially since some of the barriers, like the brick wall, are impossible to blow up. This could be aggravating to some people, but it’s a great feeling when you’ve finished the puzzle. You should also bear in mind that the power-up empties after completing each level so don’t save them for later.

Around the World in 80 DaysThe graphics in Around the World in 80 Days are wonderful. A lot of effects fill the screen, the scenery is perfect and the treasures look great. It rains sometimes and even thunders; the sun rises and falls. The only thing you may get bored of is that there is only one background for each chapter, but with each completed chapter you unlock a new screensaver.

The sound doesn’t disappoint either. It harkens back to classical music with subtle variations that coincide with native music of the country you’re visiting. Around the World in 80 Days is also full of pleasant sound effects that don’t get repetitious and make for great background sounds.

Around the World in 80 Days is very addictive and charming from the beginning. You’ll be eager to return to your computer to continue your journey.
