The Island: Castaway 2 - Walkthrough

Welcome to the walkthrough for The Island: Castaway 2! This walkthrough includes general information and play tips to complete the game.

General Information and Play Tips:

The Map: The map is in the upper right corner of the screen. It is initially covered with clouds. As you explore the islands and meet people, the clouds disappear, revealing stars, icons, and island names. The stars represent characters and the character name is revealed by placing your cursor on a star. A star will be one of four colors: blue, green, yellow or red, depending on the status of a quest: blue means no action is required from you; green means a task has been completed and you should return to that character; red means a quest is in process; yellow means that character needs to talk to you. If a character star is any color except blue, you may click on that star and travel to that person automatically. You may also click on any of the icons (fires, totems, etc.,) to travel to that location automatically. (Note: The map must be 100% clear of clouds to achieve the gold "Island Kid" trophy.)

While using the map, looking at your inventory, making recipes/potions or eating, your character is still doing what they were doing. In other words, if you are in Marshy Woods, looking around for rarities while using a protection potion, and decide to take a look at the map to see if you have uncovered all the clouds, be mindful that your protection potion is still dwindling away. So if you suddenly hear the sounds of "teeth-a-lots" snapping at you, it means you've lost track of time and you need to use another protection potion or get out of Marshy Woods pronto!

In the beginning, pick up every shell, every herb, every fruit, and every stick you come across. The fruit will sustain you, and the herbs, sticks and pearls you will always use. Resources are more plentiful in this game and they replenish very quickly. You also get tools and weapons quicker. But you will still need large amounts of money to improve your weapons and upgrade your bag. The fastest way to get the upgrades is by living off fruit and selling all of the crab, then fish and bird meals as fast as you can make them. (Crab meals are too costly to make in time and materials because they require potatoes and green ears.) Frequent round trips up and down the coastline will get you many, many logs, coconuts and crabs to sell. (In a single trip up and back down the coast I got 33 logs, 45 coconuts and 60 crabs and sold them for $1623.00).

Each chapter has a "Special Item" that must be collected in that chapter. If you miss it, it won't be available again in the game.

There are three shops in this game: Muze's General Store; Wasani's Crafts and Weapons; and Roho's Herbs and Potions. Each one becomes available at a different time in the game and each one only trades in particular items. Muze's shop does not sell or buy herbs; Roho's shop does not sell or buy food; Wasani's shop only sells upgrades for your weapons, tools and bag.

Avoid boars - unless you are hunting them. They will attack you and do damage. Stay out of the Marshy Woods without a protective potion. The "teeth-a-lots" got that name for a reason. Don't go in the Ancestor's Woods unless you are told to go there or without the proper protection. If you pass out in there, you will lose inventory.

If you plan to pick mushrooms in the caves, have a full stomach and only pick one or two at a time - preferably the ones closest to the doors, or in a running line to the door. If you get too many bites and pass out, you will lose inventory.

Two herbs can only be seen with the Potion of Clear Vision - the Oke Bur and the Datura Bowl.

All during and between the time you are doing quests, you must fish, catch multipedes, shoot Leap Quicks and boars, garden, harvest explore, cook, make arrows, cut trees, etc., in order to obtain trophies. Trophies are available in bronze, silver and gold. Be vigilant in these duties. They also mean money in your pocket.

Spoilers: Are posted after the walkthrough

Chapter 1:

- Dream Sequence
- Wake up, talk to Keja and eat some bananas.
- Talk to Mdogotu and learn everyone is in the village
- Go North to the village
- Talk to Tambusi and she will teach you how to make Fruit Salad
- Make a Fruit Salad and show it to Tambusi
- Experience another "Spirit" episode and pass out.
- You wake with Keja and Tambusi talking over you. They take you to the Chief Hakomo.
- You learn you are to be tested for the right to become a "new man". To achieve this, you must solve three riddles. Click on the totem for the first riddle. You can't seem to think what the answer is.
- Talk to Keja about the test.
- Then Mdogotu wants to talk to you. He is at the NW tip of the island. Have a conversation about multipedes. Hey! that's the answer to the riddle!
- Go to Bomani in the Sanctuary and talk to him about multipedes. He will give you a trap to catch multipedes and send you off the catch some. Return to him after you have some. He doesn't have a recipe though.
- Go back and talk to the Chief and get the second riddle.
- Now Muze wants to talk to you. He's on the island SW of the village. Muze talks to you about fishing and tells you to fish, you need bait. You need to talk to Mkulima about digging in dirt for bait.
- Go to Mkulima and she will give you a mattock and show you how to plant seeds. Seeds? Oh my gosh - the answer to the second riddle! But she also wants you to produce a potato and a green ear for her. She gives you 20 seeds. So here's what you do. Plant the first 20 seeds. When everything comes up, pick everything EXCEPT the potatoes and the green ears - leave them in the ground. Go back to Mkulima. She'll ask you how it's going. You'll answer not so good. She'll give you 20 more seeds. Plant seeds in the empty spots in the ground. Let them grow. Again, pull up everything EXCEPT the potatoes and green ears. (if your inventory is full, throw away all but 20 worms, eat the watermelon, pineapple, whatever to empty some slots.) Plant seeds in any empty slots. You should be out of seeds again, so go back to Mkulima, she'll give you 2 more seeds. Now pick a potatoe and green ear and take them to her. That leaves you with a bed full of potatoes and green ears (you will soon be able to make lots of tasty multipede dishes to sell to Muze for $52 each).
- Go back to Muze and tell him you have bait. He will give you a fishing rod and tell you how to fish.
- Catch 5 fish. Show them to Muze. He can't give you a recipe because you don't know how to cook with fire.
- Time for the third riddle. Go back to the Chief and get the third riddle. This one has something to do with cooking -
and Tambusi is right there.
- Talk to Tambusi and she will give you the recipe for Stewed Multipede. Make one and show it to her.
- Then go back to Muze - he will give you the recipe for Fried Fish. Fry a fish and bring it back to Muze. He tells you he will buy the fish back from you, etc., and his shop is now open to you - hooray!
Now you can start cashing. Take some long strolls up and down the coastline catching multipedes, picking up logs and coconuts (keep in mind your bag is still limited). Pick the rest of the potatoes and green ears and make all the Stewed Multipede you can. Catch more fish and fry them - then sell everything to Muze and start building up your money.
- When you're tired with that, go back to the Chief and tell him you've solved the third riddle.
- The "New Man" ceremony can't be held yet. So in preparation, you should speak with Bomani, Wasani, and Roho about their professions and see if any of them interests you.
- Tambusi needs you to look for Mdogotu and take him some food. (He's in Quick Leap Woods)
- Find Mdogotu - he's not hungry (he's been eating fruit and his little tummy is all pooched out). He knows what he's gonna be when he grows up - no question about it. So Yati wonders off and stumbles across a grass doll.
- Take grass doll to Keja. Keja tells the story of the grass doll. Grass doll is a Special Item and added to trophies. Keja has box for Bomani.
- Take box for Bomani in Sanctuary.(Note: If you look at a picture of the box in your inventory, you may recognize it from the last game.) Bomani is not there. You look around, see father's image and pass out...
- Bomani arrives. Give box to Bomani. Have a quick chat.
- Go see Roho in Oke Lands. To find Oke Lands, follow the outer wall of the Sanctuary North to the cave entrance. Enter the cave. If you don't touch the mushrooms, the snakes ("creepers") won't bite you. Follow the cave to the right and you'll exit to Oke Lands. Once you are outside of cave, you'll see a monkey. Follow the monkey into the second cave to the North, keeping to the right. Watch the cut scene. You will come back to Oke Lands automatically.

Chapter 2:

- Talk to Roho. He wants you to go to the Ancestor's Wood. (SE corner of the map).
- Go to Ancestor's Wood. You will go in automatically. You will swoon and pass out. Watch cut scene.
- Wake up at Keja's. Talk to Keja. Tell her you don't think you're cut out to be a Shaman.
- Go talk to Muze about white people. He is leaving, but he tells you he'll ask around.
-Talk to Bomani about hunting. He will give you a bow and 20 arrows and tell you how to hunt Leap Quick (the blue birds, quail, whatever).
- Score at least 5 birds and bring them back and show Bomani. He'll talk to you about survival and you come up with an idea for a recipe. Bomani tells you to try it and bring one back to him.
- Cook Grilled Leap Quick and take to Bomani. He approves and tells you may now use his workshop to make arrows.
- Talk to Wasani about a craft. He asks if you have anything particular in mind. When you say no, he says you must wait until you do.
- Talk to Mkulima (by coastline at Muze's) She is upset.
- Follow Mkulima to garden. Apparently Muze has a bit of the inventor in him...he has flooded Mkulima's garden.
- Go to Wasani and tell him you've found a job. Wasani tells you that first he wants some baked fruit.
- Go to Tambusi and get the recipe for Baked Fruit. Make baked fruit, show it to Tambusi.
- Take baked fruit to Wasani. He's now ready to go.
- At Mkulima's garden. Wasani gives you an axe and tells you he needs 10 pieces of lumber (you now have all the level one tools)
- Cut down 2 trees and return to Wasani.
- Follow the cut scene through the completion of the job. Wasani goes home. Mkulima is very happy.
- Look behind Mkulima's hut and find the hammer. Pick up the hammer.
- Take the hammer to Wasani. The hammer is a Special Item and is added to trophies.
- Talk to Tambusi. Mdogoku gone again. (He's next to the wall of the Sanctuary in Leap Quick Forest)
- Find Mdogoku and discover he has a stomach ache.
- Talk to Keja. She tells you she needs herbs and a magic mushroom.
- Talk to the Chief. He wants to know if you have decided on a profession. Just as you are telling him you're havng a hard time making up your mind, Roho appears and says you will be a Shaman Student. You don't seem particularly thrilled at this prospect...you didn't think you did very well at it - but it appears you have no choice. So Shaman Student it is. Roho leaves and tells you to meet him in Oke Lands.
- Go to entrance of cave. Make sure you have a full stomach. Go in cave and locate mushroom Keja needs. Grab it and run for the door.
- Return to Keja with mushroom and herbs.
- Take Keja to Mdogoku
- Go to Tambusi and tell her you found Mdogoku. Keja is with him because he has a stomach ache.
- Go to Roho in Oke Lands. He tells you your bag is not big enough. You need to get a bigger bag from Wasani.
- Go to Wasani. Wasani's Shop is now available. (Note: If you've been following my advice, you should have several thousand dollars in your coffers by now, enough to purchase the Shaman Student's Bag for $500 and the Shaman Student's Bow for $2,000. If you can afford any other Shaman Student upgrades, get them as well, but don't bankrupt yourself. Buy only the best upgrade, even if it means waiting, otherwise you're paying extra money in the long-run. The larger bag is well-worth it and the better bow allows you to kill Leap Quicks from further away and boars with one shot.)
- Go back to Oke Lands. Time to learn your first spell. Roho gives you the Solar Gift so you can see better in the caves and sends you off after two magic mushrooms. (Remember to have a full stomach!)
- Gather herbs and mushrooms. Get recipe for Potion of Clear Vision. (Receive Magic Fire) Make Potion of Clear Vision. - Return to Roho with Potion of Clear Vision. He tells you that some herbs are magic and cannot be seen with the naked eye. One of these herbs is the Oke Bur. So he wants you to drink the Potion of Clear Vision and find him Oke Bur.
- Drink Potion of Clear Vision and gather the Oke Bur in the Oke Lands. (OR you can do this: DON'T drink the potion right away. Instead, leave the area and go to the Sanctuary. Once right inside the Sanctuary, drink the potion. You will see an Oke Bur on the left and a Datura Bowl on the right. Pick them both quickly. Then run back to Oke Lands and you'll still have time to run around and gather up all the Oke Bur there.) You'll hear a noise.

Chapter 3:

- Gather the other necessary ingredients for the Fast Run Potion
- Make the Fast Run Potion and take it to Roho
- Return to the Village (You don't have to use the Fast Run Potion - you can save it for later)
- Talk to Mdogoku and learn that the villagers have gone to the edge of Marshy Woods
- Take the East path through Leap Quick Woods and find the villagers. Talk to Tambusi.
- Go back to Village. See monkey come out of bushes where Mdogoku was.
- Find Mdogoku (He's in the Sanctuary)
- Talk to Mdogoku and discover he wants a bigger stick. You'll need to talk to Wasani about it.
- Go to the coastline by Muze's shop and see if Muze is back. Roho will appear. (Note: You must go to the coastline. You'll know you're in the right place if you stop automatically and Roho appears. It is critical that you get the visit from Roho.)
- Roho tells you to make friends with the strangers.
- Go to Wasani and tell him Mdogoku needs a big stick.
- Gather the wood necessary and bring it to Wasani.
- Take stick from Wasani and take it to Mdogoku. Tell Mdogoku to go see Wasani.
- Find the stranger with the hat (Dr. Langst - he's by the wall of the Sanctuary in Leap Quick Woods)
- Talk to Dr. Langst. There is a pause. Then he tells you it flew away. You can't think of anything to say.
- Find and pickup Ashywing Butterfly. Take it to Dr. Langst.
- Dr. Langst gives you a box in which to collect things (this starts the "Rarities Collection". You will now find butterflies, shells, bugs, frogs, turtles and lizards all over the island, so keep a sharp eye out for them.)
- Talk to the red-haired stranger (Corc) (he's by the garden near Mkulima's hut). He's thirsty and would like something other than water.
- Talk to Tambusi about sweet water. She's got her own problems - her kitchen is torn up. She needs some vegetables from Mkulima.
- Talk to Mkulima. She's hiding and not coming out and she doesn't have any seeds.(If you still have the 20 she gave you before, use them now. If not, you'll have to buy some from Muze. Just plant 20 though. You'll get everything you need in the one planting.)
- Plant garden. Pick vegetables.
- Take vegetables to Tambusi. Get recipe for Fruit Water. Make Fruit water.
- Take Fruit Water to Corc. Talk to Corc. Now he's hungry. He noticed the pigs on the island. You guessed it. He wants pig meat. Oh, and look in on his friend, Gilles.

Ancestor's Bug - in cave in Ancestor's Wood. All the way to the right, before the green mushroom.
Yellow stripy - Olokun Island, between the rock and tree, north of Muze's shop.

Amphibians/Retiles:
Croaker - Marshy Wood, not far from where everything else has been found.
Reddo - Far Beach - by the bush, left of the apple tree.
Sea Nuthatch - Far Beach - Lowest place you can get through the reef - by the rocks.
Toxxy - Oke Lands - by the rock left of the dead tree in the center of the map.
Multifaced - Ancestor's Woods, before the last hut in the SE.
Forest Nuthatch - Leap Quick Woods - left of the lemon tree, just left of the little garden patch.
Swirler - Far Beach. In Dr. Langst's cave. Go forward, take the last left and go to the very end. It's right before the blue mushroom.

Golden Trails 2: The Lost Legacy. Developer’s Diary

We know you are impatiently waiting for Golden Trails 2: The Lost Legacy release. Some of you beta tested the game and have already a general idea of what it’s going to be like. Have a sneak peek at some artwork and the major decisions about the game.

Creating the atmosphere
Working on the plot

Golden Trails 2: The Lost Legacy events take place at the end of the 18th century, right after the Golden Age of Piracy. Although we choose the pirate theme as a background, we do not position Golden Trails 2 as a pirate game. Instead, we followed the original Golden Trails concept and focused on peoples’ lives and their personal stories.

Nonetheless, pirate theme contributed greatly to creating the game atmosphere and storyline. We used the most attractive details of their everyday life to establish a darker and more mysterious atmosphere, totally different to Golden Ttrails: The New Western Rush.

Right from the load screen the player feels the atmosphere of the game. Aged texture        gives the feeling of the past and the main menu scenery adds a touch of mystery.

Pirates are associated with sea voyages and hidden treasures, which let us extend the plot and scatter the adventure across the continents. We chose the places most beloved by sea-robbers: the Caribbean area, shores of South America, west and north coasts of Africa.

Each episode takes the player to a new destination. The Caribbean, North Africa,        Spain, South America.

Locations

We wanted the player to be immersed with the atmosphere and the game world. Our artists did their best to create distinctive locations: exotic islands of the Caribbean, an abandoned pirate ship somewhere on the ocean shore, African desert with Bedouin tents, Moroccan market, and even the witch’s house.

       Abandoned ship. Uninhabited Island

       Bedouin Tent. Observatory

       Witches’ house. Watch box

Characters

The game characters are the brightest prototypes of the epoch. Apart from the main characters, there is a number of personages who help to thicken the story and bring in additional originality to the game atmosphere.

Grace, a beautiful young lady, has a significant part in the game. Working on her        image, we tried a great number of different variants of garments and accessories until        we found this one.

Pirate is the speaking image of a true sea robber of those days.

The main religion of the Caribbean is Voodoo and we couldn’t do without a voodoo        witch, a nasty looking old woman.

New Features

We received lots of letters with your opinions and suggestions on the forthcoming game. And that’s the best thing that you can do as we take it seriously and care what you think about our games. Golden Trails 2: The Lost Legacy gameplay remains almost the same as in the first installment, but we added a couple of new features based on your feedbacks.

       - More new mini-games

Instead of comics-based mini-games, we decided to introduce new kinds of mini-games at the end of each episode. The main idea is to keep them consistent and relevant to the plot. Additionally, there are items on the locations that contain puzzles. All of them will be diverse and you will hardly find two identical mini-games.

Golden Trails 2: The Lost Legacy mini-games

       - A twist on the shooting gallery

The shooting gallery was one of the most favorite features. It evoked warm responses among our players and now it’s even hard to imagine Golden Trails without it. In order to give a fresh touch to the shooting gallery, we decided to add a new twist – now peaceful citizens appear on the screen together with bandits.

A fresh touch to the shooting gallery – peaceful citizens appear together with bandits

       - Cut-scenes

In between the episodes, we introduced short cut-scenes which unfold the storyline. We refused the main screen with all the episodes. Now the player is prompted to the next location right after the opening cut-scene. Thus we avoided unnecessary screens and simplified the interface.

However, we didn’t cut off the screen with episodes completely. It’s presented in the        form of a map in the Trophy Room. We also upgraded the cut-scenes: now they are        not just stiff pictures, they are moving.

       - Lucky clovers

We had to replace the sheriff’s badge by another item which would fit into the game. Probably, the first thing that comes to mind is a black spot. However, it would bring in much more piracy into the game than we wanted. After all, we stopped on a lucky clover. According to tradition, it brings good luck to its finder, especially if found accidentally. We thought that it would perfectly fit into the concept.

After we refused to use black spots, we started to work on lucky clovers. At first there        were only green clovers. Later we decided to grade them from bronze to gold.

       - A new trophy room

In Golden Trails: The New Western Rush the trophy room looked like a board with badges on it. We revised the concept and used a new approach in Golden Trails 2: The Lost Legacy. Instead of a plain board we have a room with shelves and racks for trophies.

       Golden Trails 2 Trophy Room

We hope we could satisfy your curiosity for now. However, much more fun staff await you in the game. Meanwhile, you can play the original Golden Trails: The New Western Rush, or download Golden Trails 2: The Lost Legacy wallpapers right now.

Come back for more screenshots and exclusive concept art.

Cradle Of Rome 2 Developer’s Diary. Part II

“Rome was not built in one day.”
                                                                                                                     John Heywood

It took us over ten months to build Cradle Of Rome 2. The game is almost ready and the dev team is giving the final touch to it. Meanwhile we are glad to share the details of Cradle Of Rome 2 creation.

Cradle Of Rome 2 is most anticipated Awem game. The original Cradle Of Rome set a high bar and we had to do our best to impress the game’s fans and craft the game with most challenging gameplay.

Write your own history

In Cradle of Rome 2 we introduced an intro cut-scene which makes the player feel the maker of the history of the Roman Empire and not just a simple bystander. Since Cradle of Rome 2 is a classic match-3 puzzle, we refused to break the gameplay by short cut-scenes throughout the whole game thus making it more comprehensive.

       Cradle Of Rome 2 Intro

Characters

Working on Cradle Of Rome 2 characters, we first tried to base on the personages from the original Cradle Of Rome. Peasant was the first character drawn for the game. When the sketch was ready we realized that our newly born personage is too much alike his prototype.

Cradle Of Rome Peasant                                     Cradle Of Rome 2 Peasant
                                                                                    looks more realistic

We’ve tried various variants and in the end we got this:

       Peasant: Evolution of the character

Cradle Of Rome 2 characters represent their social ranking: peasant with a basket of vegetables, militant centurion wearing a Roman helmet and, of course, the Emperor who solemnly sits on his throne.

Cradle Of Rome 2 characters represent your status

Tiles and Bonuses

Apart from visual appeal, we also worked with the functional aspects of the game. It was a great challenge for both artists and designers to create tiles and bonuses that would make Cradle Of Rome 2 different from the original game.

While some of the bonuses were refused, new ones were creatively brought into the        game. Multigem was replaced by Fireball which brought a new bonus effect.

“I'd really like to have rabbits as in a teaser,” wrote one of our beta-testers. In Cradle Of Rome 2 there are food resources, and at some point we realized that to some players rabbit tiles may associate with meat. So we had to refuse this cute tile.

Tiles which didn’t get into the game

In the beginning there were only gold coins, but then we decided to verify the gameplay and add extra possibility to earn gold resources.

Different variants of silver coins and the final one

New tiles created especially for Cradle Of Rome 2

Backdrops

Since we are building Rome, one of the greatest cities ever, it was essential to keep to a certain style – that of the Roman Empire. Before our artists put the work in hand, they went through numerous encyclopedic materials, watched historic TV shows on Ancient Rome and even went to Italy to derive inspiration from the very heart of the culture.

As a result we fixed on creating more realistic and detailed backgrounds if compared to the first Cradle Of Rome. Still we tried to make the graphics bright and eye candy. If you look at the backgrounds, you’ll see the most famous ancient sights such as an aqueduct, the Pantheon, Coliseum, Forum and more.

Cradle Of Rome 2 backdrops: Aqueduct and Pantheon

Apart from the most know Roman architectural masterpieces we aimed to show the lush beauty of nature by combining structures together with landscapes. By the way, Cradle of Rome 2 wallpapers are ready to download and you can enjoy beautiful scenes right now.

Cradle Of Rome 2 backdrops replicate the buildings you construct during the game.
Backdrops: Lighthouse, Fountains and Hunter’s Hut.

All-new mini-games

When making Cradle Of Rome 2, our main task was to make it a worthy successor of everyone’s favorite Cradle Of Rome. Thus, we kept much to the original gameplay but added a fresh touch by introducing mini-games, new bonuses, special tiles, game boards and levels.

Mini-games is an essential feature which distinguishes Cradle Of Rome 2 from its predecessor. At first it was only one type of mini-games. However, after careful consideration we decided on the following: “Why not have a variety of games?” As the result we fixed on six different types: put pieces together, pares, rotating, jigsaw, memory, and sliding mini-games.

Some of Cradle Of Rome 2 mini-games

Extra modes of play

After the beta test we got many suggestions about additional modes of play:

“I’d like to be able to go back and replay any level, for example to get more resources      and bonuses or simply enjoy it without starting the entire game from the beginning.”

“It would be nice to have to gather certain resources, or work within a very limited time      frame...”

Our main goal was to slightly innovate Cradle Of Rome 2 without losing its original appeal. That’s why we were very careful about the changes to the core gameplay. The two modes represent the variety of the classic match-3 each with its zest. For example, in Tourney Mode the player can replay any level which he already completed in Adventure Mode and win medals. In Blitz Mode the player should work fast in order to get even more time and complete as many boards as possible.

       Tourney and Blitz Modes

Cradle Of Rome 2 is our cherishingly raised child. We’ve been working with all our heart to create an absolutely gorgeous game. Millions and millions people all over the world are waiting to start their journey to the lands of ancient Rome. We did our best to keep the quality high and provide a great experience for Cradle Of Rome fans.

P.S. While you count down days to Cradle Of Rome 2 release, you are welcome to watch the game trailer

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush Developer’s Diary. Part III

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush is almost ready and the release date is gradually approaching… After the beta testing we got many suggestions and we think that you will be thrilled to see some of your ideas in the game. Let’s see what we’ve changed about the game.

Mini-games

Mini-games are one of the most exciting features of Golden Trails: The New Western Rush. We did our best to make the investigation real. You question the suspects, look for evidence, and then you piece them together in mini-games. Thus you unlock comics, reproduce the prehistory and advance in the investigation.

      Screenshot # 1: Comics based mini-game

Working at mini-games was a real challenge for us. We had to revise our approach several times before we came up to the final variant of mini-games. We wanted them to be logical, consistent and challenging enough.

Another type of mini-games which awaits you in Golden Trails: The New Western Rush is shooting gangsters. What is the best way to reveal the Wild West spirit? Of cause some action filled challenge! So we thought of a shooting gallery. That’s what we need! Shooting-gangsters would be a fun way to verify the gameplay.

       Screenshot # 2: Gangsters shooting mini-game

Game Modes

One of the most considerable changes after the beta test of Golden Trails: The New Western Rush is introducing a new mode of play – Western Rush Mode.

Screenshot #3: Golden Trails: The New Western Rush features two modes of play

After you complete the Adventure Mode and gain 100,000 points, you unlock Western Rush Mode. You can choose any location and test your hidden object skills by collecting as many items as fast as you can. So you get a chance to race against the clock and get more trophies for your achievements!

We have one more pleasant surprise for you! We prepared a special Secret Mission. Collect Sheriff’s Badges throughout your adventure and you will unlock even more levels and get possibility to get further into the story!

We all hope that Golden Trails: The New Western Rush will bring you joy and let you feel the part of this Wild West story.

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush Developer’s Diary. Part II

When we set about Golden Trails: The New Western Rush project, our principal goal was to create not another hidden object clone, but a full-fledged game. That’s why we had to think over every detail, weigh the pros and cons, and discuss all the possibilities of adding something new into Golden Trails: The New Western Rush. Every single thing, innovative or not, must find its level in the project and blend in with other game elements.

Storyline, atmosphere, artwork and characters is only a part of game creating process. Gameplay is another huge part of work which should be definitely well thought over and taken care of. In Golden Trails: The New Western Rush we used our plot and storytelling as means of creating immersive gameplay, which greatly contributes to the interactive aspect of the game.

Storytelling and its Role in the Gameplay

In Golden Trails: The New Western Rush we paid much attention to the presentation of the plot. Since it’s very annoying and tiresome to read long texts and dialogues, we decided to give information in small amounts, so that it can be easily perceived.

Firstly, we used very brief dossiers to introduce our characters. We wanted the player to grasp and swallow this information without much effort.

Screenshot #1: Dossier on Harry Johnson, Rifleman

Secondly, we tried to create bright dialogues which are filled with apt expressions and humor.

Screenshot #2: Tribe Chief Catahecassa speaking with Sheriff Jack

Thirdly, pop-up windows are essential for both gameplay and storyline. They are means of communication between the sheriff and the player. They tell us what we need to do in the location or, for example, on finding a piece of evidence, the player is prompted with the sheriff’s remarks and guesswork.

      Screenshot #3: Pop-up windows carry sheriff’s remarks

And, finally, mini-games… They are comics-based and are used to present the storyline. On completing a mini-game, the player learns the background of the story and finds out some curious facts about Sunnyvale citizens and their lives.

Screenshot #4: Comics reveal the storyline

Hidden Objects

Our main goal was to keep players challenged by Golden Trails: The New Western Rush. We actually didn’t want to mix all sorts of hidden object tasks so we kept to the gameplay mechanics similar to that of Romance Of Rome. Instead, we added some variety to the objects hidden in the location.

      Screenshot #5: Indian Camp

There are five different types of items in the game. All of them have their own purpose or function. For example, Evidence Items are used in mini-games, while the so called “Stolen Things” do not appear on the search list and can be accidently found somewhere in the scene. It can be tricky to find such items, but your efforts will be rewarded with trophies!

Screenshot #6: Trophy for finding a stolen thing

All your trophies and achievements will be located in the Trophy Room.

      Screenshot #7: Trophy Room

Hints

When thinking about Golden Trails: The New Western Rush hint system, we wanted to make something special… something that would be enjoyable and open for every player. No matter whether Golden Trails: The New Western Rush is difficult or easy for you, we hope that earning hints will be real fun.

We actually thought to bring in some variety to the gameplay and add some action challenge, thus getting closer to the western theme. So shooting down gangsters who appear in the most unexpected parts of the location is not only a way of earning hints but also a kind of “stylistic device”. We hope you will like it.

Developer’s Diary. Golden Trails: The New Western Rush. Part I

What do you think of when you hear words western or Wild West? Bandits and cowboys, gunfights and face-to-face shootouts, dusty towns with ramshackle houses and isolated ranches, vast valleys and prairies... That's the common stereotype which firmly sits in peoples’ minds. Cinematography and men of letters did their bits in creating a strong image and typical western characters.

At the beginning of the development process of Golden Trails: The New Western Rush we took into consideration all stereotypes as we wanted to create a genuine Wild West atmosphere. We mustn’t break them on any account. Otherwise it won’t be a western. On the contrary, we decided to add something new both in the plot and gameplay, plus a bit of romance.

In spite of the fact that there is a number of games with The Old West setting, we are confirmed that western is a very rich theme and there is much space for imagination and lots of uncovered possibilities for creation. In Golden Trails: The New Western Rush we intend to reveal the great potential of western as a casual game theme.

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush Storyline

When making Golden Trails: The New Western Rush, the developer’s team aimed at making a catchy and appealing storyline. It’s very important to make it familiar, true to life and at the same time to bring in something unexpected.

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush Intro

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush can boast of rich and intricate plot. It begins with an ordinary bank robbery in Sunnyvale, a small Wild West town, but as soon as you go deeper into the game you uncover lots of intriguing facts.

Typical game characters: dance-hall girl Charlotte and Sheriff Jack

In spite of the fact that Golden Trails: The New Western Rush features detective storyline, romance of the Wild West is one of the most essential aspects in the game. While the player investigates the bank robbery, two love stories unfold before his eyes. We think that love theme is a unique possibility to reveal characters’ personality.

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush screenshot # 1

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush is a great adventure with lots of secrets to unravel! When thinking about the plot, we wanted to make the player live the game. So we tried to center on people’s lives and their personal secretes rather than on abstract mysteries.

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush Artwork

Artwork plays a very important role in the game making process. It is not only the game’s appearance. Graphics set atmosphere and influence the player’s perception of the game.

Working on Golden Trails: The New Western Rush graphics our artists focused on creating a vivid Wild West image. We decided to try an absolutely new type of graphics which is different from what you can see in Cradle Of Rome or Romance of Rome games. It looks a bit cartoonish but at the same time it’s not deprived of the sense of reality.

Game Characters

The main task set out for our artists was to present a genuine, heartwarming and welcoming atmosphere and make the player feel ‘here and now’. A special attention is paid to our characters. They are the brightest prototypes of the Wild West dwellers.

Some of the main characters of the game

Each character is a remarkable and memorizable personage. For example, Charlotte, a pretty dance-hall girl, adventurous Cowboy Joe, brave Sheriff Jack, Mr. Taylor, a greedy and self-interested banker. Every character has his own secret which you will uncover playing the game.

Backgrounds and Locations

We used the most distinctive and associated with the Wild West locations such as The Grand Canyon, Indian Camp, Stable (a ranch can’t do without a stable), Sheriff’s Office…

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush screenshot # 2. Canyon

A special emphasis was put on details such as views from windows, county style furniture, wooden and leather textures, wallpaper patterns, décor items. Houses and buildings which you’ll see in the game are chiefly made of wood and are typical of small Wild West settlements. At the same time we tried to create bright and lively scenes by adding rich in color items and animated elements. Every item should fit perfectly the theme and situation.

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush screenshot # 3. Square

Audio

Sound effects and soundtracks always make a significant contribution to the game atmosphere. Golden Trails: The New Western Rush is rich in ambient sound effects which help to enliven the environment. For example, horse neighing, birds chattering, or guitar strumming. Pleasant county tunes which will remind you something of ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ soundtrack accompany the gameplay.

Moreover, we are preparing a surprise for you! A special song will vivify the game. It’s going to be about game events and will be performed in a cheerful and humorous way. We hope you’ll appreciate it.

Trophies and Rewards

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush is very generous with rewards. We actually tried to think over every possibility to encourage our players. Each found item brings you points. The faster you find them, the better score you have. That influences your total game success. When you have won a definite number of points you are awarded with a Bonus Star which goes to the Main Menu.

Golden Trails: The New Western Rush screenshot # 4

Like Romance Of Rome, Golden Trails: The New Western Rush will compliment you with trophies! On completing the game, the player gets a possibility to publish his achievements online to his Awem account. In addition, the game has a very impressive Trophy Room where all the players’ achievements are collected.

This is just a little bit of what awaits you in Golden Trails: The New Western Rush. Next time I’ll dwell upon the gameplay and some innovative features. Stay tuned!

Developer’s Diary. Cradle of Rome 2. Part I

As you know Awem studio is engaged in creating Cradle Of Rome 2, the sequel to the hit puzzle game Cradle Of Rome. Making a game is a creative and demanding process. The work is in full swing. Everyone is so busy and hardly has time to enlighten the PR department about the upcoming Cradle Of Rome 2.

So, I had nothing to do but to furnish myself with all the necessary stuff, attack Awem headquarters and spy into Cradle Of Rome 2 development process. Now I am here and ready to share with you some rare bit of information I’ve heard and I’ve seen.

Let’s begin!

City of Rome

The main and probably the most intriguing part which awaits you in Cradle Of Rome 2 is the city! It was redrawn for several times until the developer’s team understood: “That’s what we need!”

On the one hand, the main goal was to preserve the architectural style and atmosphere; on the other hand, to bring in some distinguishing features into the new city. When the fist variant of the city map was ready, it looked rather atmospheric and attractive. However, after the buildings were modeled and the images were finalized, the city seemed to lack something… something very important. Every single element looked great and beautiful but there was no real harmony and the feel of entity.

Sketches of the first Cradle Of Rome 2 city.

So the work at the City Map was put off. Later on the artist team got a creative task from the lead designer of the project – to rearrange all the buildings on the map as they see it. So it was like a competition. As a result they got many variants and only some of them, the best ones, were chosen for further consideration.

Some more sketches of the city. But only the best one was chosen!

While looking through sketches of the new city, there appeared a very simple and obvious idea. The city lacked its heart! Of course, there were streets and squares like in every real city. But the goal was to create a dream-city and every city must have a heart.

Among several city maps there was the one with its central part, the heart. What a coincidence! This work belonged to the very artist who was working at the original Cradle Of Rome. It's fate. We are on the right track!

So, in the middle of the city is a beautiful square with fountains and all the streets meet here. Now the city looks immense and agreeable at the same time. It has its heart! And now everyone who looks at it is sure the city couldn't be better!

Here is part of final Cradle Of Rome 2 city. It’s so exciting that we decided to carry on an intrigue      and let the players reveal the city’s heart themselves.

Gameplay

Match-three remains the key genre in Cradle Of Rome 2 BUT pleasant surprises await. The developer's team is thinking to introduce absolutely new game levels filled with additional challenges. To some extend it’s a kind of risk when you bring in some novelty. Well, as they say ‘Nothing venture, nothing win’.

Cradle Of Rome 2 screenshot #1

From the very beginning there were many ideas of what features to add and how they will be perceived by the players. The most important point here is not to overcomplicate things and keep reasonable balance between amount of innovation and gameplay simplicity, between level difficulty and challenge.

Unlike Cradle Of Rome, Cradle Of Rome 2 will feature fun mini-games. Now you need to put together a blueprint in order to buy a new building.

Cradle Of Rome 2 screenshot #2

Cradle Of Rome 2 will be diversified with new puzzling shapes and barriers like obstructive Skulls, or helpful Multi-Shapes which can be matched with two identical items on the board, or simply Frozen Tiles which will increase challenge and call for strategic thinking.

Game Modes

Almost without any hesitation the designers decided to add two more modes of play. Why? Because it provides more diversity and extra challenge, helps to make the game even more exciting.

Cradle Of Rome 2 menu bar

Adventure remains the main mode of the game with over 100 levels of matching fun and exhilarating process of building the City of Rome. As soon as you play enough of “Adventure” you will get the possibility to unlock more levels in Tourney and Blitz modes.

Get ready for the frenzied action in Blitz Mode. It will definitely please those who love the taste of adrenalin. Or enjoy Tourney Mode which lets you choose a level from the list. On completing a level you are awarded with a trophy.

The system of trophies is an essential part of the game. Like Romance Of Rome, Cradle Of Rome 2 will have an option of publishing the gained trophies online. Players will be able to boast their puzzling skills and compare their results with each other.

Game Artwork

Our artists do their best to create superficially attractive and rich in color images and locations. We are proud of the characters and backdrops we create for our games. Cradle Of Rome 2 is no exception.

We set a new level of graphics and Cradle of Rome 2 can boast of totally new and vibrant backdrops. But what is more important we preserve the atmosphere and style we invented in the original Cradle Of Rome.

Cradle Of Rome 2 backdrop: Mine

Cradle Of Rome 2 backdrop: Port

Game Audio

Speaking about atmosphere of Cradle Of Rome 2, I can’t but mention the sound aspect of the game. You will hear already familiar and pleasing tunes but in a new and fresh rendering. The original Cradle Of Rome has distinctive and relaxing soundtracks. Introducing absolutely new music would be very unfair. We don’t want to break the harmony of the game. The only thing we’ll do is just a little polishing.

Have a look of what we have already prepared for you.

It’s Father’s Day!

"Any man can be a Father,
but it takes a special person
to be called Dad."

The third Sunday in June is marked in our calendar as Father’s Day. Our Fathers are wonderful people. Just think how much they’ve done and are still doing for us... They are always there for us at hard times and would give anything in the world to see us happy and safe.

Our Fathers are different and love different things. What does your Father like best? My Dad loves sweets, popcorn, Star Wars, crosswords and computer games. He’s not a huge gamer but he wouldn’t mind playing a couple of levels. Among his favorites are Star Defender games and Astro Avenger 2.

That will be trivial if I say that the best gift for your Dad is a computer game. No. I believe that every Father will get his special and unique present on this day.

No matter what you give… The most important is what you say. Show your gratitude and love… Take care of your Dads. They need to feel your love… always, not only on this day.

Happy Father’s Day to all Dads in the World!

Happy St. Valentine’s Day!

It cannot be doubted that St. Valentine’s Day is the most romantic and the sweetest (in a literal sense) holiday of the year. Like any other holiday it has its history, traditions and symbols.

I always associate St. Valentine’s Day with red hearts, fragrant roses, chocolate, pink ribbons, lovely Cupids, teddy bears and snow-white doves.

As St. Valentine’s Day approaching I think it would be nice to mention a few of the games that are well themed for the holiday and are full of romance and high spirits.

Love is an essential part of our life. I wish that on this wonderful day you will hear these words: “Be my Valentine!”

Love each other and show your love, as John Lennon said: "All you need is love".

Hidden Objects rock the word!

Among all casual games genres Hidden Objects is the most popular nowadays. A little history about Hidden Object games… It all started out of Huntsville. Mystery Case Files: Huntsville is considered to be the first hidden object game.

It came as a simple game but at that time it was something incredible. From then on, Hidden Object genre has fortified its position among other genres of casual games and undergone some changes. From plain object searching it came to quest-like gameplay and extended itself with elements of other genres like puzzles and/or time-management.

Hidden Object games are one of the most popular genres nowadays. Why? The answer is on the surface. Playing a Hidden Object game is just like reading an absorbing book or watching a gripping movie. There is a catching plot that takes you to some place, and YOU are the main hero of the story. You live through the game and experience emotions…. No wonder that there are many games which were released after popular books, TV serials and shows. Women's Murder Club: Death in Scarlet, Righteous Kill, National Geographic: Herod’s Lost Tomb or Agatha Cristie games. And, believe me, they were no less successful than paper and TV releases.

Do you know that every week a new Hidden Object game comes out into the world?

By the way, Awem studio is planning to launch a number of Hidden Object games this year. Among them is Romance Of Rome, which is planned to be released in March. So, get ready for exciting adventures!
